A Study on Dysmenorrhea of Middle and High School Girls, College Students and Working Girls in Seoul


Abstract
A study was conducted toward 917 unmarried girls experiencing menstruation (middle school girls: 182, high school girls: 276, college students: 190, working girls: 269) on the factors related to the menstruation and dysmenorrhea. The data was collected from March 8 to March 18, 1977 by the means of questionnaire.
The obtained results were as follows:
1) An average age of menarche was 13. 9 years and those of student groups was 13.3~13.4 years and working girl group was 15.1 years.
2) 60.3% of the total respondents had experienced the regular menstrual cycle and 28 days type was 47.4% among the regular menstrual cycle group.
3) The duration of menstruation ranged from 2 to 8 days with an average of 4.64 days.
4) 85.3% of the total had some subjective symptoms by dysmenorrhea with an average number of 2.46 symptoms per one person. Among the subjective symptoms, abdominal pain was 21.3%, lumbago was 19.0% and neurotic condition was 17.8%.
5) To endure without any treatment for dysmenorrhea was the first solving way (64.2%), to take some analgesic drugs was the second (19.2%), to rest in lying position was 12.9% and to take some hot pack on the painful area was 3.7%.
The drugs used generally dysmenorrhea were the Saridon (55.3%) and Baralgin (36. 0%).
There were significant difference, among the solving ways for the dysmenorrhea(p<0.005). 6) There were 57.4 % of total respondents who had taken some kind of solving
ways for the dysmenorrhea by themselves and 47.2% with other helping
personnels. Among the other helping personnels, their mothers were 47.2%,

their friends were 44.1%, their sisters were 7.5% and medical team were-1.2%. 7) Most respondents. had not changed their daily activities by the dysmenorrhea(70.1%) and 29.9% of total had changed.
51.7% in the group who changed their activities had rested in the medical or nursing room, 30.3% left early from their works, 16.7% been absent and 1. 3% visited clinics.
8) The most manifested time of the subjective symptoms due to dysmenorrhea was just prior to menstruation (36. 1%), the most duration of subjective symptoms was one day (41. 6%) and the most frequency of dysmenorrhea was always in menstruation (42.1%)
